A Gentleman in a Landscape with a Horse
Lewis Vaslet (1742-1808)
Pastel on paper, c. 1783
Originally a soldier from York, ‘Vaslet of Bath’ settled in Bath in 1775. Towards the end of his life, he and his family owned a cottage near the canal by Sydney Gardens, a stone’s throw from the Holburne.
Although he also worked in miniature and oil, most of Vaslet’s portraits were small oval pastels, depicting a head and shoulders only. In this exceptional, full-length example of his work, a benevolent gentleman pauses to admire a delightful landscape while his horse takes a drink.
